How long have you been in tech? 2
How did you know you wanted to get into tech? I knew early on in my recruiting journey that eventually I wanted to get into tech. The innovation, fast paced, and constant growth really inspired me.
How were you able to transition into the tech space? It was hard at first to be honest. Even with people referring me over I kept getting rejected. At that time I felt like they wanted people with tech experience. But I met a recruiter who worked with tech clients and she had a contract role for DoorDash and I took the opportunity. Were you supported by your family to get into tech? My family has always supported what I decided to do for the most part. I’ve always went after what I wanted so it was never an issue. I know they’re proud of me.
Do you feel represented in tech? Yes and no. Yes, because I know there are alot of Filipinos in tech. But I think there’s an opportunity for more growth there, especially for Filipino women in leadership roles.
Do you feel supported by the Filipinos in tech community? (in general not this org). I did when I worked at Meta. We had a Filipino ERG and it was nice to have community there. But there’s room for opportunity to have that support all around from people in other companies. We should have something like and employee resource group but on a larger scale with Filipinos all over.
What advice do you have for other Filipinos in tech that are having issues growing and obtaining promotions at their company? Take initiative and be part of the change. Close mouths don’t get fed. Speak to your leadership, be part of the DEI efforts, if possible find a mentor.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Hopefully somewhere where there’s innovation happening, a place where I’m able to grow and create major impact. With all of the growth in AI I can’t even imagine what 5 years will look like, but I’m excited to see the advancements of tech. I hope to get to be a part of it!
