Deconstructing Cultural Myths to Grow Your Career

Have your parents ever told you “Keep your head down and let your work speak for itself” or “Don’t rock the boat”? While they wanted the best for us, cultural norms can sometimes be counterintuitive in an American corporate setting. In fact, this type of advice may be holding us back - according to a report by Harvard Business Review, Asian Americans are the least likely racial group to be promoted into management in Silicon Valley. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In this interactive workshop, we’ll deconstruct common myths about career advancement in the Filipinx community, break free from those misconceptions, and practice new ways that we can become the best advocates for our careers.

Takeaways:

  • Meet and learn from other career-driven Filipinx in Tech

  • Understand how cultural and environmental differences may be hindering Asian Americans from advancing in their careers

  • Practice new tools you can use to advocate for growth opportunities, make the case for a raise/promotion, and build champions in your organization

PAST x PRESENT x FUTURE: A Decolonization Workshop for Philippine Diaspora

PAST x PRESENT x FUTURE: A Decolonization Workshop for Philippine Diaspora

The workshop will be anchored around three pillars:

PAST (Know Thyself): The process of decolonization begins with learning (sometimes, unlearning) truths about our collective history and how the forces of the past have shaped the present. (Main format: Didactic, multimedia instruction)

PRESENT (Heal Thyself): The process continues with articulating our collective and individual presents and exploring activities that exercise empathy for others and for ourselves. (Main format: Small-group breakout discussions, grounding & empathy exercises)

FUTURE (Grow Thyself): With a fuller sense of self, the workshop culminates with a discussion on how to become actively anti-racist, better allies, and take concrete steps in co-creating a more equitable world for all. (Main format: Interactive discussions with facilitation)

Takeaways:

  • As a FilipinX, you will come away with a renewed sense of pride in your identity and learn a more complete picture of our collective history.

  • You will have opportunities to self-soothe, self-care, and begin the healing process of decolonizing yourself.

  • You will have the opportunity to create your own Decolonize Toolbox to continue the process of unlearning, learning, and solidifying identity and allyship to Black communities.

  • You will meet fellow Filipinx where you can learn from and connect with each other.
