Do you have any advice for people that are afraid to ask for a higher salary or negotiate a better offer?

Before asking for a higher salary, make sure that you keep track of your contributions to the team and how your work is aligned with the department and company goals. This helps showcase the value that you bring to the company and why you are such an asset.

Do your research online and don't be afraid to go looking for new opportunities. Looking for other opportunities can also help you gauge on what is out there. Never be afraid to ask others outside of your company (but have around the same title/goal that you want) for their thoughts and what the market is offering. Interviewing with other companies helped me feel the market out, how to talk about myself and how to position myself when going into the salary negotiation.

Also get things documented. If they can't offer you a salary increase, ask them what else can they offer you to meet the market right now. Give yourself a timeline as well of when you want to accomplish things.

I nearly doubled my salary in less than a year since I jumped from an old company to a new one using these strategies. Also don't take their "no" as a reflection of your work/value - don't take it personal and remember this is all just business.

Do you have any advice on how to advocate for yourself to get a raise and/or promotion at your company?

Surround yourself with mentors and people that are rooting for you and can help guide you. I have been able to get where I am today by doing so.

You have to advocate for yourself because no one else will do it better than you. Never be afraid to ask and to search other places to get to where you want to be. Always look at a job as what can I learn in my current role/company in order to get to where I want to be. I always look at a job as a way of learning. Ex: what hard/soft skill can I learn from this company to help round me out as a better and multifaceted professional.

Look at what you value as well and make sure it's aligned with what you want out of the processes. I left a senior manager title for a company that could only offer a manager title but the salary and benefits were SOOO MUCH higher (benefits was something I truly valued)

Do you have any other advice/ comments?
Life is short and you might as well do it at a place that values your work and what you do. Don't be afraid to start over as well, sometimes you have to start with a smaller company to build skills that you may need for your future position. And also be gracious with yourself, your job should not define you but should be looked at just another additional facet of your multi-dimensional life. <3 life is too short and you might as be happy no matter what. :)
